Where to start Research?

Curious where to start? No worries.

While tools like Google scholar exist, it kinda sucks if you're looking for something more specific. I don't know about other fields of research, but I use PsychInfo for finding articles. Once you've found an article, it can cite it for you in many different forms most importantly APA 7th addition. If you are writing something, this is a good way to source it. If you're just curious, this does not apply to you. No worries.

I can't find any Articles! :(

Here's a short list of how to use older search engines effectively.

An example of this for me searching for studies on Transgender Adults who are also parents looked like this: (Trans or Transgender or Transgenderm* or Transgenderwom* or Trans Wom* or Trans M*) AND (Parent*) NOT (Trans Youth or Trans Child or Trans Adolecent)

If you are still struggling with finding any articles, check to make sure you are not:

Okay I've found articles, but I can't read them!

Don't worry buckaroo, I got you. One of the values of Scientific Research is "Communality." Basically, to be a good scientist you must share your information and make it as acessible as you can to everyone. Most scientific journals don't like this and like to hide things behind paywalls. Now, you have a few options.

  1. Email the Author (or several of them): A fine choice when you have plenty of time. Most authors will gladly hand out their papers for free if you ask.
  2. Go to SciHub with the DOI link: Fast, generally works within a minute or two. Can be hard to find so looking up "Where is SciHub Now" should help you out

What's a DOI link?

A DOI link is an online link that all published articles have that will link to a page for the article. Sometimes it is behind a paywall, sometimes it is free, and very occationally it links to a PDF. Basically, it's an easy way to find the article.

Here's the DOI link for an article in my drop down menu above: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.copsyc.2022.101517
